ISN
welcomes 270 new members from Japan |
|
| |
|
|
|
| |
|
During the 51st Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Nephrology (JSN)
(May 30 - June 1) in Fukuoka, ISN had the honour and pleasure
of welcoming 270 new members from Japan into the Society. Recognizing the
importance of international collaborations and the involvement of Japanese
scientists and physicians in global nephrology, the JSN formed a special
committee to intensify the cooperation with ISN and to significantly increase
the number of Japanese members in ISN.
ISN Councillor Dr. Toshio Miyata has led the efforts in Japan which serve
as a model on how every ISN member can make a difference in promoting
ISN membership in his or her country.
We welcome our new Japanese members
into our global ISN community, and look forward to having similarly
successful events in many other countries around the world. |

ISN
announces 2008 Genzyme Renal Innovations Programme (GRIP) recipients |
 |
| |
|
|
|
| |
|
The Genzyme Renal Innovations Programme (GRIP) has announced the list of
the new recipients of the 7th round. Since 2002, 56 researchers,
clinicians and fellows in the field of nephrology in Europe, North and South
America have been granted.
Each year new topics are released during the ASN meeting with a call for
submitting letters of intent. These letters of intent are screened by an
independent Review Board who selects approximately one fourth of the applications
for a final selection based on full dossier submissions. The grants are given
for projects lasting a maximum of 1 to 3 years.
Topics of this 7th round were:
- Mechanisms of stem cell mediated renal repair
- Osteocytes and phosphate homeostasis in renal disease
- Novel molecular pathways that regulate mineral metabolism and/or adynamic
bone disease
- Contributions of ciliary dysfunction to abnormal epithelial cell growth
in renal diseases
- Chemokine regulation in renal disease
We congratulate the 2008 recipients: Prof. José Badano, PhD (Institut
Pasteur de Montevideo, Uruguay); Prof. Ariela Benigni, PhD (Mario
Negri Institute, Bergamo, Italy), Prof. George Bou-Gharios, PhD (Imperial
College London, UK); Prof. Jerry (Jian) Feng, MD, PhD (Texas A&M Health
Science Centre, Baylor College, USA); Prof. David Kaplan, PhD (Tufts University,
Massachusetts, USA); Prof. Makoto Kuro-o, MD, PhD (University of Texas Southwestern
Medical Centre at Dallas, USA); Prof. Alan Salama, PhD, FRCP (Imperial College
London, UK); Prof. Jagesh Shah, PhD (Brigham & Women's Hospital, Massachusetts,
USA); Prof. Bart Smeets, PhD (University Hospital Aachen, Germany); and Prof.
Jason Stubbs, MD & Shiguang Liu, MD, PhD (University of Kansas Medical
Centre, USA).
Genzyme is committed to support the advancement of medical knowledge and
practice in kidney disease with innovative research projects
in nephrology and the GRIP is an extension of this commitment
to this field. You can read more about the programme on the Genzyme
website.
The new topics for 2009 will be released during the upcoming 2008 ASN Renal
Week. Keep an eye on your Nephrology Gateway for more info on the 2009 topics
and the application process. |

Listen in! In our latest Kidney Podcast, we
discuss Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), which affects approximately
10% of hospitalized patients. In an interview with Dr. Joseph
Bonventre of the Harvard Medical School and Brigham & Women’s
Hospital, the Kidney Podcast reviews the utilization of biomarkers
to diagnose AKI, the difficulties in introducing new biomarker
techniques, and the future of AKI treatment.

ISN
Nexus Symposium on Transplantation receives 17 hours of EACCME accreditation |
 |
| |
|
|
|
| |
|
Register today for the ISN Nexus Symposium on Transplantation and the Kidney
(September 25 – 28, 2008, in Rome, Italy) and benefit from up to 17
hours of credits from the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical
Education (EACCME). EACCME credits are recognized by the American Medical
Association towards the Physician's Recognition Award (PRA). To convert EACCME
credit to AMA PRA category 1 credit, contact the AMA.
This Nexus Symposium connects clinicians with basic researchers interested
in immunopathogenesis of CAD; risk factors; pathology; immunosuppression;
and novel strategies for management. To date the success of kidney
transplantation has been limited by three major challenges: development
of progressive chronic allograft dysfunction; the need to continue
life-long immunosuppression to prevent rejection; and the development
of post-transplant complications that is also related to continuous
drug therapy. The scientific programme will address these complex
issues throughout plenary lectures and clinical, basic science
and translational sessions.

Case
Presentation
A case of polyomavirus-associated nephropathy presenting late after transplantation.
Polyomavirus-associated nephropathy (PVAN), an important cause of
allograft failure in renal transplant recipients, is usually
diagnosed within 12 months of renal transplantation. Bansal et al. present
a case of PVAN that developed more than 80 months after transplantation,
however, highlighting the fact that PVAN can occur late after transplantation
and should be considered in any renal transplant recipient who
experiences a change in renal function.

Multimedia: Interactive Tutorials
in Radiology
These tutorials teach medical students and residents
basic and more advanced Radiologic imaging including CT, US, MRI and
Nuclear Medicine. Anatomy, the current menu of Radiologic tests utilized,
a detailed approach to evaluating images, and the typical Radiologic
presentation of common abnormalities are emphasized. The tutorials
are voiced over and the answers to questions are formally tracked so
that the user can assess his or her own progress.
