COUNCIL ON STANDARDS & CERTIFICATION CONDUCTS MEETING IN BRUSSELS

ASME’s Council on Standards and Certification held a meeting in Brussels, Belgium on 12 October, 2011, marking the first time the Council has met outside North America. The meeting was held in Brussels in order to raise awareness of ASME’s activities in a vital market, as well as to engage strategic stakeholders and potential collaborators.

During the Council meeting, speakers were brought in from organisations including the U.S. Mission to the European Union, the World Trade Organisation, the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO), the World Nuclear Association, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), and the U.S. Commercial Service.

On the margins of the Council meeting, Standards & Certification volunteers and staff conducted meetings with key offices within the European Commission and CEN to discuss policy and standardization issues in order to help ensure that ASME’s standards and conformity assessment programs are technically aligned with, and accepted as equivalent to, other relevant standards within the European Union and elsewhere around the globe.

FROM THE ASME PRESIDENT: THE ENERGY-WATER NEXUS

Victoria A. Rockwell, ASME President
Victoria A. Rockwell, ASME President

Many believe the world will soon face a serious shortage of both energy and water. Expected shortages in energy have driven much research activity in alternative fuels and energy efficiency and conservation in recent years.

From the perspective of supply, energy and water are interconnected and interdependent, prompting engineers, policymakers and environmentalists concerned about sustainability issues to often discuss these resources in a common conversation. Energy production requires water for mining, refining and power plant cooling, and in turn, water management requires energy for pumping, transport and treatment. Therefore, we speak of the energy-water nexus.

Several leading organisations, including the National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Energy, have been steering the debate regarding the interdependence of energy and water and sponsoring effective, technology-based energy and water management programmes. And now ASME has stepped to the forefront, creating various forums to inform and educate engineers and scientists on the energy-water nexus. ASME has formed the Energy-Water Nexus Interdisciplinary Council, which seeks to expedite the development of technological solutions that reduce the consumption of energy and water.

The Energy-Water Nexus Interdisciplinary Council had a strong presence at the 2011 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress, held 11-17 November, in Denver. The Council sponsored roundtables to discuss best practices for minimizing the use of fresh water for the cooling of thermal power plants. The Congress keynote event on 14 November brought together three experts to examine the critical interconnection of energy and water and the challenges faced by the United States and other countries to ensure future supplies of both resources. The keynote panelists — John G. Voeller of Black & Veatch, Mike Hightower of Sandia National Laboratories, and Michael E. Webber of the University of Texas at Austin — covered a broad range of subjects pertaining to the theme, “Energy and Water: Two Vital Commodities,” including energy requirements for water treatment, life-cycle management, and the role of public policy in providing access to clean water and energy.

The energy-water focus continued in the technical programme of the 2011 ASME Congress, with presentations on power-plant cooling, electricity-water modeling, desalination, and “smart water,” among other topics.

Engineers have much to contribute to the energy-water nexus and must play a significant role in ensuring future supplies of both commodities in the years ahead. ASME stands ready to support their efforts.

DISTRICT AND COMMUNTY NEWS

ASME Italy Section at a glance:

The ASME Italy Section was established in 2010 and officially launched on 17 June 2010 during the DHOB meeting in Rome with ASME past President Robert T. Simmons and District H Leader Bernard Gindroz.

The Section’s main mission is to operate and relate its actions with Italian engineering associations, many of them already have partnerships with ASME. To fulfill this mission several actions will be undertaken. One of these actions was to organise an international conference to discuss the correlations and the differences between PED Requirements and ASME Code. The conference took place on 20-21 October 2011, and was attended by over 140 participants from Europe and Asia, which represent the most important European companies involved in fabrication of pressure equipment and systems. The speakers presented their experience in design and fabrication regarding how to meet PED requirements with the use of the ASME Code, and highlighting the actions commonly taken in order to cover those aspects of PED Safety Essential Requirements that are not dealt with by ASME Code. During these two-days of conference, ASME and European Notified Bodies representatives, as well as industry and university representatives, shared with the attendees their experience and their proposed solution to the problems. The round tables that closed each session offered the attendees the possibility to discuss with the speakers the most critical aspects and their own specific issues.

  • Francesco Alicino, Chair
  • Francesco Martelli, Honorary Chair
  • Eugenio Brusa, Vice-Chair
  • Luca Gaetani, Secretary
  • Paolo Lista, Treasurer and Webmaster

Book of the month

Taguchi Methods: Benefits, Impacts, Mathematics, Statistics, and Applications Taguchi Methods: Benefits, Impacts, Mathematics, Statistics, and Applications, by Teruo Mori

Newlytranslated from the Japanese edition, this unique and practical book is unlike others in the area of robust design. The expert author describes how to conduct robust technology development in a time- and cost-efficient manner, as originated by Dr. Genichi Taguchi in the early 1990s, and includes all aspects for the development of robust technology and robust products: quality philosophy, quality strategies/planning, management and organization, robust design methods/tools, and real-life case studies from industry.

As a result, this book is written to teach engineers from various backgrounds the fundamentals of quality engineering such as: 2-step robust design, parameter design, tolerance design, quality loss function, S/N (signal-to-noise) ratios, orthogonal arrays, additive confirmation, and more. This book also provides engineering managers and executives with a practical blueprint for company-wide implementation of quality engineering. Numerous award-winning case studies are discussed to illustrate the uses and benefits of practical statistical analyses such as main-effect plots, and analysis of variance.
